I am a teacher from England living in Japan and have NO university degree whatsoever. Therefore I want to do a distance B.A. at a British University. (Would prefer to do a Japanese Language B.A.)
Can anybody recommend or provide information on a good university regard this? What were your experiences? What were the costs?
Of course I've been scouring the net and forums. The OU courses are too limited in scope and nothing there for me, SOAS is finance or management, Sheffield - need to get more info from them, but they don't do a B.A. in Japanese, just an M.A.
Have also received information from the University of London regard B.A.s in English or History. (They don't offer Japanese). If I can't do Japanese, then will select a subject that I find stimulating and rewarding.
My rationale behind choosing Japanese is that I want and need to learn the language, and I need a degree to help with job prospects and visas in the future. It seems better to kill two birds with one stone.
I don't want to do a degree in TESOL/Applied Linguistics/etc. Been teaching for over five years now and would prefer to move into a new career sooner or later, such as writing/editing and which I do now on a freelance basis. Being proficient in the local language would help in this professional capacity.
Thanks for your help.
(I've also asked this question on Gaijinpot.com - a Japanese forum). |

Am not sure but think you might find it difficult to do a distance BA as there don't seem to be many around.
I'd say that your best option for finding a course would be to look at ucas.ac.uk which has a search feature then get in touch with the universities direct.
Hope this helps. |
