Hi there. My Qualifcations are as Follows:
I have a 4 year Bachelors degree.
I have 2 years of EFL experience in Japan.
I have 1 year teaching experience in the States.
I have a TEFL Certificate.
I am looking for a job in China that furnishes my own apartment, not a shared apartment. I am looking for something that pays 6500RMB or more per month. I am also looking for something that pays my airfare there. I also do want to learn the Chinese language and do want a somewhat 9-5 job, M-F with the occasional overtime and weekend work is fine. I am looking for a place that is small but that I can still meet people and is safe for the most part. I am looking for a reputable company or school, and I am posting this because through looking on the boards, I somewhat know what I am looking for but I don't know a whole lot about the Geography of the Region or the cities within it. I also do not know which companies/schools are good and which ones are bad. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. It is also important to note that I am looking for something long term and I also am wanting to try to do a masters while I am there, although still the plan is to stay long term. Thanks so much, Jon |

As you and the school seem to meet each others criteria, I've pm'd you a link to a place I worked at from '02 to '04. I don't think too much has changed since then. |

Do you mean buy your ticket upfront? Not too many schools will do that, and even if they do, they'll often hold the return portion hostage on you until you complete your contract. Most schools will reimburse all or some of the airfare after you complete the contract, which is fair considering that China already sees a ton of deadbeat teachers and if schools here bought air tickets up front there'd probably be even more! |

Usually reimbursement comes at the end of the contract, not when you arrive. |

I appreciate the reponses but it would be nice if we would quit talking about the small stuff the insignifact details. Me receiving money after the contract is done for airfare is fine-it's not a deal breaker lets move on from there...now what I really need is help finding a job in China and that is why I posted this thread. Any help would be appreciated.

Asgard,
Let's try to answer some of your questions but it will be necessary to ask some others.
1. Is it correct to assume that you are a U.S. citizen?
2. Your age, gender and ethnic background may or may not come into play in the PRC. Gender and age generally are not used as exclusionary tools in the hiring process here, while ethnic background may and often is.
3. Where do you want to work? Do you want to work in a big city or do you want to work in a small city? What part of the country do you wish to work in?
4. Do you want to work in a university or do you want to work in the private sector, i.e., language training school?
5. If you are considering the public sector, with the exception of certain government schools in Beijing and in Shanghai, you may find that your initial salary requirement of RMB 6,500 is beyond what government schools will pay for a first-time hire with no prior China experience with only a bachelor's degree. Then again, if you are considering a language mill, then you should have no trouble reaching that amount of money but the hours will be considerably longer.
Additionally, you may be able to reach that kind of money by teaching in a government primary, junior or senior middle school. That kind of money does exist in those kind of schools.
6. How long do you wish to stay in the PRC? That will affect the hiring process (i.e., six months, one year, etc.).
7. In any case, you will be required to a pass a medical screening here, which is not at all as pro forma as many first-times believe. Should you have any kind of STD or TB or any other contagious disease deemed by the authorities to exclude you from China, then you will be denied residence. So make sure of your health status FULLY before leaving home.
8. Where have you been looking for jobs? What sites have you consulted? What agencies have you used?
Perhaps if you could answer these questions, the members of this Board would be in a better position to assist you.
And yes, it is true -- it is very rare these days for a school to prepay the airfare. Frankly, I have never, ever seen it happen.
All the best,
HFG |

I apologize if I sound like a bit of an as* here, but what makes you think we should be about finding "you" a job? Why don't you set about finding your own job? It's not that difficult, especially with your experience and qualifications.
Were not an employment agency. We offer advice based on our experience (some good, some bad ). That doesn't mean some here might not have leads to a particular job (as indicated by eslstudies), just don't be surprised if a lot of job offers aren't forth coming. Many here have been burnt helping first timers and as such are leary about doing so again. Why don't you try using the archives, or the internet? A wealth of information there.
My advice, decide exactly what it is you want, and where it is you want to do it, then set about doing some research of your own, and work at securing it.
Beyond that, stop feeling entitled.

Dear Shawn,
Your post is exactly on-the-mark. Leery indeed. There used to be a thread here until it was taken down last year about the China hands being burnt by the newbies. I myself helped two newbies last year and I will never, ever do it again. One Canadian Mme drove me crazy with PMs to help her. She really had no qualifications at all -- I mean no university, a week-end TEFL and no experience. I used all of my connections in Beijing to get her the job that she wanted and then not only did I never, ever receive a "thank you" but she became extremely ungrateful. Newbie-itess. Etc., etc.
Your advice is very, very pertinent.
All the best,

Of course, this begs the question "why did you help her?"
I've noticed young, female newbies get better treatment around here, especially when they let drop that they are French-Canadian. All the cafe smoothies dust off their best French.

BTW, the OP on this thread was appreciative of my lead, so no problems in this case. I only give leads if the poster seems qualified though. |
