a bit early to be planning this properly, but i like to think ahead...

i seem to remember a while back seeing adverts for a summer programme with EF. they pay you even less than normal but they fly you out for the summer to teach efl. did i dream this or does it actually exist?

Yeah, EF summer contracts still exist. Same housing/insurance/visa benefits as regular EF contracts, slightly reduced pay, and a roundtrip airfare for a 10-week contract.

I'd imagine that a lot of schools will be planning their summer recruitment already; mine certainly is.

With regards to the all above you've mentioned it is still the truth or at least it is in some EF centers in China. Some, because EF centers' owners do what they consider for suitable for themselves. So, if you plan on following the central recruitment offices, you'll be just fine.
Remember that those benefits are well deserved since you'll have to work weekly hours up to the limit of your contract, which should mean 29 real hours of teaching weekly and with 6-day working week. And, traveling prior to your lessons is highly possible as well. Some EF centers have a routine to send their teachers to other locations to teach that's as far as one hour away in some cases.
By the way, make sure they put you on their EF insurance plan, since I know that the owners've cheated on that one. Ohh, remember/expect that you might live with two other teachers in one flat during your stay. They might put you in with a couple of their regular (one year contract) teachers. Wink

Peace to Chenglish First
and
cheers and beers to all hard working FTs in China Very Happy
