How's the demand for individual tutoring on US standardized tests in China? If I got a 20-hour a week private language school job, would I technically be allowed to do this kind of work on the side? |

I don't know what the rules are about this, but I know that a lot of people do outside tutoring. Also, I met a girl here in the States whose boyfriend works for Kaplan and tutors in Shanghai for American high school students living there. If Kaplan can find enough people to teach, than you should be able to find people, too. I bet there's also a lot of Chinese students who'd love help -- lots of kids there have the goal of coming here for college. |

You have to ask that question your employer; it will be stated in your contract that you have no right to work on the side, or it won't be stated...
And don't set your hopes on coaching students for exams too high...thery are all prepping for some exam or other anyway and think their own teachers guide them best.
TOEFL has found an increasingly competitive rival called IELTS. Students want to go to Australia or to Europe, and to do so they need to pass an IELTS exam. |

ACT .... i've been doing the GAC (Global Assesment Certificate) as well as IELTS preps in china .... sort of tough for chinese students used to their own way of studying as well as being examined
i'd agree with Steppenwolf on his post above
OP, you need to come to an agreement with your employer to avoid too much hussle, if the jar breaks ... if you know what i mean
still, i are not so legal even after that agreement with your employer....your work visa is for one employer only unless you have your own legit biz in china
having said that, many do their own "private teaching" in china and have been doing it for a long time too....i'd be careful if i wanted to stay in china for a long period of time...and remember chinese regulations might've been the same for a while, but their enforcement is somehow changing in some areas more than others
peace to private tutoring
and
cheers and beers to all hard working FTs in China |
