Start making contacts now.. while no one will yet have definite positions until at least June or July ... its good to really know what is out there. Where in Mexico are you looking at and what kinds of jobs are you looking for? |

I am looking for jobs teaching kids, or teaching adults and kids in rural Mexico, somewhere in the south east or south west, where it's green. I have been looking at jobs in Michocan. Thanks! |

Sorry, that's a pretty vague statement. There are always jobs teaching in language schools and you would be able to teach a variety of ages and levels. Many rural, small-town kinda places, especially in the south of Mexico don't have much in way of English schooling options. If someone did get a job in a rural area I think the wages would have to be really low.
The elementary, middle and high schools will start hiring around late May and continue through the beginning of the school year until all positions are filled. Most of the hiring will be done during the months of June-July. If you are serious about getting a job than you should really think about coming down here around June-July. Many schools will never hire a teacher sight-unseen and most require a demo class.
I recommend that that you narrow down what it is that you want to do and where. Then focus on those areas and plan on coming down for at least a few weeks around June-July. |

I agree prof that is vague, but maybe she wants to cover all the bases?
But I don't agree that the wages in rural areas "would have to be really low." I work in what most people would describe as a rural area, though in Oaxaca, it gets a heck of a lot more rural than the place where I work. I don't consider my pay to be really low at all. And the cost of living is much lower in rural areas than in the cities. Last week I was talking to a teacher in Mexico City who is making almost twice what I make, but I've got more cash in my pocket at the end of the month than he does.
I agree that most of the hiring will happen June-July, some on the ball places might start eariler, and we often find ourselves continuning to hire until September because new hires have a way of backing out (I've got a much hiring paying offer in the Middle East, My mother is really freaking out about me moving to Mexico so I've decided I can't come a this time, etc.)
Another thing for Carolyn to keep in mind is that "green" in her post. Most of Mexico recieves 90% or more of its rainfall between June and October. I live in an area that is extrodinarily green in September, and extrodinarily brown at the moment. |
