Hello all!

I'll be moving to Taipei in May and have a list of incredibly ignorant questions, which I will space out over the next week or so.

First of all, is it necessary to leave the country when your visa changes from tourist to working? (I am a U.S. citizen by the way.)

Thanks in advance to those kind souls out there who are kind enough to relieve my fears.

Philip

No, it's not necessary. You'll then be on your way to getting an ARC, won't have to worry unless it's cancelled by your employer terminating you. Even then, you might be able to get an extension and another employer.

But if you're coming here on your own, apply for a visitor's visa, as it will buy you more time. Hardly ever will you be able to stay in the country without making a visa run if you only come on a landing visa. Coming from the states, this allows you only 30 days.

A visitor's visa costs $100 and you can get it at-not a consulate-but at a 'Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office.' Consulates don't exist for Taiwan due to the precarious political situation with China.

Some here say "get a job before you come here." But even then, they'll ask you to get a visitor's visa. It's up to you.

That's what this forum is for but be sure to do yourself a favor and use the search function and/or read through previous posts to make sure that you are not asking questions that have been asked and answered before. You will find that you will get more informative answers if you show that you have done your best to get the information together yourself.

Provided that you get your application for a resident visa in before your visitors visa expires then you won't need to do a visa run.

One correction to the post above, visa free entry (landing visas) are not extendable nor transferable so no matter what happens you need to leave before the expiry of that visa even if you find work. You need to actually have a visa to change into another visa and visa free entry is not a visa but a stamp enabling you short term entry into the country.

So, OP, go for a visitors visa and the best one is a 60 day one as 30 days may not be long enough to get your resident visa application in.
