I've read a couple of posts here about this but they are all a bit dated. How does a DUI on your record affect whether or not your get a working visa/landing permission? Does anyone out there have a story to tell about this? Would a school like NOVA that would otherwise hire you not do so because of this heinous offence? Well, I've got to jump in my car and run to the bar.
Thanks in advance. |

I knew someone with a DUI on record who was here teaching. It was common knowledge amongst his friends and co-workers, but it's not like he made that fact known to anyone prior to coming (i.e. the eikaiwa's management or the immigration authorities). As far as I know, there were never any problems.
Self-edit... I also was going to add, (but forgot the first time)... Even though he was able to come (and secure his visa/job), I can't guarantee that everyone in a similar situation would be successful. Maybe he was just lucky. I don't know.
And secondly, the alcohol limit in Japan for driving is ZERO. Plus, if you get caught at a checkstop, not only do you lose your job instantly, the fine is approx. $3000 from what I recall... But someone else may have more accurate figures. Anyway, don't even think of getting into a car or on a motorbike even after just 1 beer -- zero tolerance means just that.

It will be very difficult entering the country when you have a criminal record. It's great that you can make fun of a stupid event that could have killed someone and that so many innocent people die from every year. Your user name fits.

Thanks for the sanctimonious reply Canuck. You must truly be Canadian. I dont know about Canada but in the states the legal limit is 0.08 blood alcohol level. Studies have shown that driving while talking on a cell phone is more dangerous than driving at this level. Here is a link to match yours: http://www.forbes.com/forbeslife/health/feeds/hscout/2006/06/29/hscout533489.html. But the stat in your link that 3 in 10 Americans are involved in an alcohol related crash is amazing. Still, I wonder why you bothered to reply when you had nothing substantive to add. A vacuous statement that, It will be very difficult entering the country when you have a criminal record doesnt help me much. I could have figured that out in a conversation with my dog (and he just was run over by a dude on his cell phone). |

I know someone who had a dui back in 1999 and got a job and visa. He just didnt say yes to a criminal record. He got in the country and had a sucessful teaching career and now is back in the states teaching at an elementary school. A lot of people drive buzzed or drunk, most just dont get caught. |

I'm sure the "dude on his cell" will have problems getting a visa to work in Japan too. |

Not to start a big argument, but Drink Driving and speeding are 2 things I just cannot fathom any sane person doing.
It's obviously illegal, it's obviously extremely dangerous to yourself and many others.
Why do it? |

Baka,
I worked with an AT at Nova who had a B & E on his record. But, I'm assuming when he was hired they didn't do background checks, and he would've been hired about 5 years ago.
He's still working there, the sad ba**ard. |
