Hey guys,

Just a question about banks out in Istanbul. Are there branches of groups like HSBC or Lloyds TSB out there or would it be better just to stick with a Turkish bank when opening an account? I've heard Akbank is pretty decent, but from the threads here there seems to be some issue over whether we first gotta have social security numbers to open one. Bit tricky this as we're only on tourist visas for the start.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best bank to open an account with when we get there..?

Take a photocopy of your passport into a tax office. You'll have a tax number within minutes. Then go to a bank of your choice and open an account.

Dmb, does this mean that if you have no tax number you can't open a bank account in Turkey??
It seems like in Saudi Arabia, if you have no Iqama number you will not be able to open a bank accout!

BTW, dmb, do you remember my white 'puppy' of Riyadh? It is now in Istanbul Zoo enjoying his new life in Turkey. Laughing

Go to the tax office in Galata. They don't give you any problems there. The Kadikoy tax office likes to make up various lies to make the whole process expensive and tedious for you.

It's supposed to be the case 007. But this is Turkey... I believe some people have managed to get an account without a number. White puppy 007???
The one in Sisli is painfree as well.
