Hey, I just did an interview with WYS. They secure contracts with schools in Japan and thier offer sounds really good. Anyone heard of them or have any warnings about them?

Just make sure you have a contract and read the fine print then you should be alright!

A friend of mine recently did an interview with them in Toronto. I hadn't heard anything about them, but he mentioned that they pick up where JET teachers leave off? Something to that effect, and that while they were 'not-for-profit' (?) they could offer him quite the incredible salary and the transportation costs to get there.

But I haven't heard about them since. Any update?

I'm still waiting to hear from them myself, but yeah, they pay about the same as the companies but airfare and rent is apparently covered. And you teach in middle schools and high schools rather than in a corporate english school environment. It all sounding pretty good but apparently they only do interviews a few times a year since they act as sort of a filler for JET. Hopefully things work out, otherwise its ECC for me...

I leave for Japan on Thursday morning of this week! It's all coming together. But I'm going to be going over there with Peppy Kids Club.

My friend Jacob recently did an interview with WYS and he's still waiting to hear. I know he's also looking into Nova and Peppy Kids, and I get to be the guinea pig for him.

Best of luck![/quote]

Our area, Langley, BC, participated in a WYS exchange last year and it was a huge disaster. WYS says that they are "Not For Profit", but they definately are. They charge the Japanese families approx $18, - $20,000 for the 10 months and at this end they get the placements in the schools for free by agreeing to send 1 Canadian for each Japanese received here. They do not follow through on their promises and were a big disappointment to the school administration, as well as those families that participated. Langley/Aldergrove received 10 students and we sent 5 to Japan. We were promised that our children would be taught Japanese in JSL classes much the same as the international children being taught here in the ESL classes. Our children were requested to assist in the English classes and were not given Japanese lessons. Because it is not a true "recipricol" exchange, the Canadian children are moved every 2 to 3 months into new homes, and had long distances to travel to get to school. I can supply more information for anyone who is interested. I guess my biggest caution is "BEWARE" - THEY ARE NOT HONEST - THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR.

hello,

I'm just curious if anyone has had an experience working with WYS yet. I can't decide if I feel good about the contract or not and would love to hear some personal experience. Thanks and I hope someone can answer!

Non-profit doesn't mean that they don't want to make money. It just means that all of what is normally considered profit for a for-profit business (after paying overhead like building and stafing fees etc) gets funelled back into the company.

Securing jobs with schools makes them a human resources company. They cannot control what the schools actually do with the people put in their schools.

The same problem exists in JET, in fact it's probably the number one contributing problem to most issues- aside from really poor housing- that JETs have with their job. We are told we will be doing one thing in Canada, but when we arrive in Japan, we are told that no, they don't need people to teach culture, they just need people to model authentic English speach. The fact that we might want to teach our culture is irrelevant. In this case, the fact that the kids might have wanted Japanese language classes was apparently irrelevant to the school. They wanted someone to model authentic English language. Many times, if you ask yourself what a 17 year old guy who has adjustment problems would do in any given situation, that's exactly what the Japanese will do in the situation, because they simply do not understand "treat others the way you would want to be treated".

Hello,

would just like to add that if anyone has heard anything at all about WYS or EDAJ I would like to hear it. It can be word of mouth.

the search produced the knowledge of the company but I can't seem to find any record of anyone having worked for them. thank you!
