Just wanted to let people know that Bilge Adam is hiring.
While there are some bugs with the education program, a motivated, well-organized and creative teacher would be the right match.
It is a very good company to work for and there are many benefits, like paid holidays and salary (as opposed to an hourly rate). It is a very relaxed atmosphere, secure and the resources are endless. They have copies hundreds of English teaching materials, a laminating machine, films, computers for every student in the classroom, projectors etc...
If anyone has any questions, let me know... |

Hey there,
I sent you an e-mail a while ago about Bilge Adam. Just wanted to give you my two cents about the school.
1. Pay is salary (1'900-2,500?) for full timers (30 hours).
2. They say they have free Turkish classes - they don't
3. They supposedly give a basic health insurance for full timers
4. Two weeks paid vacation in a year
5. Classrooms are fully furnished with computers, projectors etc. (translation - Internet Cafe!)
6. The books are written by Bilge Adam and stink. At the intermediate they use new interchange. Upper-Int is business English only and they use In Company (note: transition between all levels is nearly IMPOSSIBLE)
7. There is no structure to the education at the school. Turkish teachers lay the floor work and teach EVERY aspect of grammar up to advanced within the Elementary and Pre-Int levels, then the natives come in and clean up the mess.
8. If you want easy money you can work here and put up with the worst students I have ever seen, but if you give a *beep* you won't last more than a few months!
I'm looking for a way out! |

Dmb,
I have spoken to some Native teachers at Bilge Adam, they basically support that email you received.
Relaxed atmosphere and they seem to treat their teachers well. Always paid on time.
The big criticism is the books. They use their own books for Elementary and Pre Intermediate.
They are not much good. Apparently teachers (both Turkish and Native) have been criticised for trying to augment the book.
The Turks simply accept it. However, if you do give a damn about seeing your students improve, you'll be outta there.
With a computer in every class, students often are on the net during class. Yet some complain that they dont' learn

Hmmm.. I wonder how they can be the worst students this person has ever seen? Obviously he/she has not worked with too many young people here.. hehe
I applied to Bilge Adam and had an interview. I was not impressed with the Kadikoy operation and manager. He told me I would have a schedule but would be on call always and expected to work whenever they needed me, regardless of my schedule. The pay was not too impressive. Maybe they have improved with pay and benefits. Was not much when I was talking to them. |
