Is there a minimum number of weekly teaching hours required to obtain the work visa in Taiwan?

You must have a contract stating at least 14 hours of work per week in order to qualify for a work permit. This is the minimum amount that the government considers you would need to earn enough to live in Taiwan.

So this would mean then, that you could apply for just a part-time job and get your ARC?

Or would that depend on whether the company wants to sponsor someone working only part-time?

Hello All,

14 hours is considered 'full-time'....as far as anyone at the government offices cares.

Technically, you 'owe' the school that many hours per week...and the school 'owes' you 14 hours per week.

In reality, you can just communicate (as much as possible) up-front with your school's manager. If you work only a few hours a month, then they might expect you to pay more out-of-pocket to cover your insurance, taxes, etc. This could total over $1000 NT per month, or so.

Does this make sense? If not, post again and we'll try to clarify any remaining issues!

Best wishes,

Taylor

The minimum amount of hours is a farce. If a school wants to hire someone for 6 hours a week and has the papers to apply for a visa, they will do so. They will lie to the government that you are working less than 14 hours a week. They will submit that you are going to work 14 hours a week.
