6 years ago I stayed at a relative's place, and they did not have high speed internet, rather no PCs at all (VN isn't exactly wired 100%). I guess over the years it became a lot easier for the internet to reach homes. As far as I know there are only internet cafes? I've never talked to my relative via her home, so I'm guessing that cafes are the only places you can go for that kind of stuff?
I have a laptop and I'd like to use cable or wireless internet. I need it, really, to keep in contact with my family in the States and not have to pay high bills for the telephone (messengers are free, after all). I'd like to stay in Saigon as well, but I dunno if the houses are readily equipped to handle that? Can someone enlighten me on the tech info? |

Internet in Saigon is available nearly everywhere. I can't comment on how far out into the outer counties the good sevice extends, but in town the service is quite good. Aside from the countless internet cafes, FPT provides the better service for home use over VNPT or a few of the others. Their stock jumped over 400% the first day of public offering if that says anything. Standard ADSL service at home runs around 250,000 VND per month, but with initial setup and you have to buy the adsl router... your looking at around 1.6 million for the first month total and 250,000 VND per month after that for pretty much unlimited service. There are peak hours in the evening around 8-10pm where it sometimes slows, but I have been on at 2am and hit speeds of 400mb/s downloads and uploads working on websites. Expect speeds of 10mb-100mb during the day on average from a home connection. |

What's an ADSL? An Asian DSL router?
I do have cable and DSL routers that I used back at home so I'm wondering if it's the same..? The prices don't seem too steep at all. And I didn't understand what agency I'm supposed to contact if I wanted internet at home...is it a government-based company? |

ADSL is Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line. It just means that the download speed is faster than the upload. The DSL you get back in the states is probably ADSL. |

Also don't the internet companies / service providers in HCMC tack on about a 3 million dong deposit, requiring something like a 2 or 3 year contract, of which that deposit doesn't come back if you end the service before the contract date? Just as well, I never saw any internet offering at only 250 a month, especially not at unlimited. Have those monthly rates simply gotten better? |

If your in an apartment building you can ask you landylord to set you up. I think my building has one main connection and they just plus everyone into the main "thingy"
Its cheap and seems to work great for surfing and downloading... |

No, there are no hidden costs, deposits, or long term contracts with FPT. What I quoted above is what I pay for their service. Can't say for the others since I have seen VNPT in action and its service is crap. Real easy to get set up and then you pay 250,000 per month. May have to wait 4-5 days for someone to come and run a line to your house, but that is due to high demand for their service. It's worth the wait. |
