I am mulling over my job offer, getting my transcripts, forms sorted and so forth. On my travels I found this info on the web:

Quote:
As from 10th July 2004 it is much harder to employ a foreigner in Thailand on a Work Permit as a new rule defining the minimum payment per month that the foreign worker must receive has been decreed. To renew a permit the employee must show that they consistently earn over the minimum wage per month and prove that they have paid the tax on it.

The minimum wage will be as follows:
Americans, Canadians, Japanese B60,000
Europeans and Australians B50,000
Koreans, Taiwanese, Hong Kong Chinese, British Commonwealth Citizens, Singaporeans, Malaysians B45,000
Indians, Middle Easterners, mainland Chinese, Indonesians, Filipinos, B35,000
Laos, Burmese, Vietnamese, Cambodians and all Africans B25,000

The only exception will be accredited journalists who need only B20,000 and certain people working on contract to the Royal Thai Government.

Now, I can't verify whether this information is true or not. If it is, how are teacher salaries 'in the field' reconciled with this?

I know I will be getting the market average if I say yes (so close to it too!), but does minimum healthcare really cost about 250 a month? (the only way I can see that the figure may be made up.

Of course, in my search for an answer I have been told a phrase that might be heard often: "This is Thailand" as a reason why you won't earn this 'minimum wage'.

Can anyone throw further light on the subject?

The problem with the list is that almost every occupation is exempt from it. The job I have now (non-teaching) and the job I had before this one (teaching) were both exempt.

I do know one person who signs TWO contracts where he works. One with the legally required amount and one with the amount he is paid.

This is Thailand - almost every rule has a way around it.

This "regulation" you cited is nothing new. Minimum wages for foreigners have been around ever since I've been here (over 15 years). As Ted said, the teaching occupation is probably exempt from it. The way it was explained to me was that "any job where you are helping educate Thais, the authorities officially turn a blind eye." (that is, until you rub them up the wrong way and then they throw the book at you).

Regarding your health care: I'm covered by the government. I get free medical care at certain government hospitals. They take a hundred or so baht per month off my salary--or is that for tax and retirement superannuation?--I don't know. It's miniscule anyway.
