I know a couple of the branches were closed down abruptly.

Teachers and students were told to go home. The reason given, was that it was a fire drill.

However, to just drop this on students without warning and have school cancelled for the REST of the day, seems a bit odd.

Anyone know the real reason?

Dude

I think you're misinformed, mate! The reason why 'cheney' called a meeting with the ET directors was because the members of the Turkish NUJ (Turkish National Union of Journalists) were petitioning the US Embasy outside the ET to free the black journalist Mumia Abu-Jaba who has been in jail for 25 years. He also contributes to Evrensel as a guest writer, a Turkish daily newspaper. He was sentenced to death in 1981 for killing a policeman, but in 2001, his death sentence was overturned after another man admitted he had killed the police officer.

Where do you ex-pats get your information from, for fox sake?

The difference depends on the location of the inquirer.
