So while I was on holiday in Shanghai, I bought a really great The North Face backpack. One of those top loaders. Very good qualitiy.

ONly problem is that the top part os a drawstring and then two clips, so there's no way to lock it.

Anyone found a good way to lock these things? I was thinking about sewing on metal rings and then putting locks on that way. I just need something to deter theft.

And why do they make most of these backpacks without ways to lock them?!?

I've come across little cloth slipcovers that can go over the bag and can be zipped then locked. They are usually used when its raining, like a giant ziplock baggie over your vulnerable bag. Try a hiking equipment store.

I have seen backpackers with metal mesh covers for their packs. Does anyone know where to get these? They look so safe. I had my pack stolen recently, and it is heartbreaking and a pain in the ass. (The most heartbreaking part was losing my camera still holding my pictures from Australia.)

I guess losing things goes with travel, but I am trying to learn how to minimize the losses.

Hi,

Those mesh things are called `pack-safes`. The are usually available at outdoor shops that sell backpacks and the like. They are usually not cheap.

I was travelling recently and most people didn't lock thier packs. Thier reasoning was that it makes you a target for theft.

I locked my pack because I travelled alone and I am suspcious by nature. My pack is a hybid travel-rucksack with zips mind you.

My advice would be; Don't break you neck to lock it as a knife or someone stealing you pack whole makes it worthless, keep an eye on it.
