Does anyone have any more information about the new science and technology university mentioned in the Gulf News a few weeks ago? It is supposed to open in September according to the report but I have read nothing since.

It's in today's New York Times, and you can probably access ithe article for a couple of days. It's being set up with the aid of MIT, and about 20 of the faculty and staff will be going to Massachusetts for a full year to observe how they do research there. The Abu Dhabi institution will be mostly a graduate-level research college and supposedly will enroll its first graduate students in 2009.

Come to think of it, I believe that was this week's Chronicle of Higher Education, not the NY Times. Sorry for the error.

Here is some info from one of the jobs advertised recently on the Chronicle..

The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, a new and independent non-profit, tax-exempt research and educational institution, is being founded with the assistance and advice of the Technology and Development Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Initially offering graduate-level courses in Abu Dhabi for a highly-select student population, The Masdar Institute is dedicated to premier engineering research and the provision of a definitive, research-driven education. The goal of the Institute is to develop, over a period of years, indigenous research and development capacity in Abu Dhabi, addressing issues of importance to the region in areas as critical as: Renewable energy, sustainability, environment, water resources, systems engineering and management, transport and logistics, and advanced materials. The mission and government supported mandate of The Masdar Institute, is to provide qualified men and women in the region with the opportunity to obtain graduate degrees in these critically important and globally-relevant technical fields.......

This Masdar initiative was just launched this past weekend at the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi. Due to start in 2009 ans supposedly has an allocated campu between Khalifa City and the airport.
Not sure what need it will have for language teachers as all job ads so far are looking for Science/engineer Phd holders.

However another University is due to open in Abu Dhabi in the fall, it is an initiativr between the government and Singapore and will focus on Education- I think it is called the Emirates College ofAdvanced Education
