What kind of places? When I say adults I mean people who are paying their own way, not kids being forced to study English by their parents are schools and not university students who aren't paying their own tuition.

Sorry but a dumb question, Margot. Shocked
Why would you think there wouldn't be? Some people do actually want to learn a foreign language and are prepared to commit financially to it. Is this not true where you come from? Language schools (mills) all over China have many adults studying of their own volition. Try doing some simple research.

Another one is www.tefl.cc/teachinchina.htm where you can contact the employers directly, even though I know the OP wants to teach (mature) adults who are paying the tuition themselves.

OP: You should be aware that from personal experience it'd be almost impossible to be teaching students of that category only since your employer would be a language training centre and language training centre generally caters to youngsters (anywhere from 3/4 to 18/19).

FYI:
I came across one advert placed there by DECAI Guangzhou on this website; this training centre was in the international and local news a couple of years ago because they had hired n Anglo-American teacher and put him up in a hotel on Huanshi Donglu; he was killed either by a criminal or by a truck driver... a most mysterious case (we discussed this incident at length in this forum).

It seems that you should probably concentrate your search on the private companies that offer English classes rather than universities or public institutions. These are generally located in larger cities, but you can still find them in some of the smaller cities. Perhaps if you let everyone know which city or cities you are considering then people familiar with those places can give you the names of some places to consider.

If you are concerned with legal status while working in China then my advice would be to try to avoid the F visa route that many of those private training institutes want you to take. Try to find a place that can offer a legitimate Z visa just to be sure.
