A former U.S. marine recently fought back against a group of muggers who attacked a tour bus in the city of Limon, Costa Rica. The former marine -aged about 70 years! - put the mugger in a head lock, which eventually killed the attacker.

In Istanbul, the crime rate has risen in the last few years, with muggings increasing, including recent attacks on the trains and ferries.

But be careful about fighting in Turkey, because many of the muggers in Turkey carry knives and work in groups.

I was once in a taxi when it had a bump with another car. The taxi driver jumped out to hurl abuse at the other driver, the other driver produced a wooden stick thingy, the taxi driver then came back to the taxi, opened the glove compartment, took out a gun and went off to wave it in the face of the other driver. I don't know how this incident ended. as soon as I saw the gun I legged it(no I didn't pay)

a mugging story.

My mate was going home one evening when a mugger jumped out. He, being Irish and pi$$ed decided to run away...... up a dead end street. My friend admitted defeat, handed over his cash and phone. He asked if he could take the sim card out as he had important numbers on it. The mugger gave him permission.

btw, there was an article in Hurriyet this week. There was a 60% increase in reported muggings, pickpocketing and Burglary last year.

He should have been charged with murder.

Technically you are right, but it looks more like a case of involuntary manslaughter. Looks like the old marine went overboard in restraining the mugger in the head lock and the latter died of suffocation.

The marine got away with it, because they (Costa Rica Tourism Authority)
do not want to lose out to the revenue provided by the tourist industry in Costa Rica.

Had that happened in Turkey, the foreigner would have had to dance through the Turkish judicial system, before any decision being taken, and that could have taken months if not longer.

It's estimated that half of the cars in Turkey have a gun in the glove compartment. With that in mind, think carefully before adhering to the title of this thread.

Okay, so I am a consumer *beep* and have just bought an ipod which I DO PLAN on bringing to Turkey as I am psychologically dependent upon my music. Should I be very careful about having said ipod out in public, or is it not a big deal?

Every Turk on Istiklal seems to be plugged into those white earphones, and i personally have been toting my non ipod mp3 player around for the past few years with no problem. Still waiting for my first mugging. Five years of intact handbags and counting (that one incident in Bulgaria notwithstanding since it wasnt actually in Turkey and they only took my changepurse)

I've been mugged here a couple of times. Still, l think this city is a lot safer than any of the large cities (and small cities) in Australia. A mugging certainly does knock some sense into you not that l was very careless beforehand.

Great... İt is about time some realistic statistics come out about crime in İstanbul. İt is true you can face crime anywhere but this is one of the places you hardly hear about it. Everything from stealing your phone, while you are talking on it, to your apartment building falling while you sleep. İt's a bloody shame. This place is about as safe as hanging out around my anus after İ've eaten 2 bean burritos from Taco Bell... Twisted Evil But luckily for most of us, we can leave when we want to.. Peace

Can't say I've been anywhere near your anus, but if its safer than Istanbul then obviously you have a very tidy and efficient digestive system. It really isnt that bad here- I'm still waiting to get robbed or stabbed or assaulted. Its taking an awful long time considering the rough neighbourhoods I have lived and worked in over the years. I still think its safer than many North American or British cities. Far fewer seriously whacked out nutjobs out here.

The first time l got done over was while my friend and l were coming home from work. Melek and l were both working at ILM in Laleli back then and living in Sultanahmet. We were just around the corner from where we lived when we were jumped by about four guys. They got Melek's bag but not mine. Anyway, they ran off and we chased after them screaming in hysterics. All the men in our street decided to gather in a posse and go after them wielding planks of wood and iron bars. You can get mugged anywhere in the world, but in how many places would people you don't really know go out in a posse for you?

dmb, do I really look so hard? Do I scare people? I wonder if this is why I have yet to be robbed, etc. Maybe I should hire myself out as bodyguard.
