I'll be taking a position in Novosibirsk in about two months. Any tips/advice/resources would be greatly appreciated (particularly real estate and banking).

I dunno, Do you, by any chance, speak or read any Russian?

See my comments to the guy going to Saint Petersburg just now and get back to me if you have specifics.

As far as banking, you have to use the ATM "bankomat" and expect to loose 2-3 points on each transaction.

As far as real estate, you can lease, but you better forget buying.

I have to disagree with MDK on buying real estate here in Russia. It has been my experience that real estate is one of the few stable investments in this turbulent country. As long as your "i"s are dotted and "t"s crossed, then it can be lucrative, relatively safe and, considering the wealth of land in Russia, reasonably cheap. Make sure you have local help and it shouldn't be a problem getting real estate (assuming you have money of course Laughing ).
Good luck!

Hmmm, my learned colleague may be right, but you may want to consider this.

If something goes wrong with your real estate purchase, you will have to seek redress in the Russian civil court. If you are confident that you will be able to pursue a case- should it come to that, then go ahead.

For me it was much easier to find a nice Russian lady who already had a flat. The competition tends to thin out after age 50 or so.
