How can I transfer money from one bank of China to another? I'm going to be moving to Shanghai. DOn't have an account there. But have one in this small town. Is there any way to close this account when I am in Shanghai and have all the money transfered to Shanghai? |

Your Bank of China bank account should be good wherever there's a Bank of China. I could access my Bank of Communications account when I was travelling around, unless I'm missing something, I don't think it should be necessary to close your account and open a new one. |

I was recently in Shanghai and tried to withdraw money from the teller. They said that they couldn't and I had to use the ATM machine. I think I've got a speical bank account or something . . .I really don't want to have to use ATMs all the time. |

I've gone to banks in a number of different provinces in the SW and I haven't had any problems. It was a RMB account. However, in a small city in Hunan, a teller had me fill out a form and wouldn't use my ATM card. My suggestion is to try a couple of banks in Shanghai...not everything is uniform...or maybe open a new account with a different bank.
One thing I'd like to point out is that the commercial banks, like China Construction and maybe some of the others, aren't connected to banks in Hong Kong. It's good to know before you go.
good luck,

With Bank of China you cannot manage an account between provinces (and often between cities) on a normal basis. You are limited to the frequent withdrawl via ATM.
You need to open a new account in your new location and then ask them to wire your money out of the old account into the new one. They usually charge you 5 RMB for this service. |

Ditto what Joe C. said but regarding my ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China) account. My Chengdu bank account wouldn't let me withdraw money from the teller in Kunming and Dalian, but the ATM card wasn't a problem.
On the other hand, I found it strange that I could use the ATM card without problem in Dalian, Kunming and Xi'an but half of the ICBC ATM machines in Chengdu would frequently deny me! @#$^*($@*~! |

The Agriculture Bank wouldn't let me use my account passbook
in a different city, only the ATM card, but I could use the ATM
card to do most functions I needed. |
