Have any of you noticed anomalies in recent TOEFL scores? Even allowing for the ongoing confusion caused by the format change, there seems to be some very peculiar scoring technique at work, especially on the conversation section. One of my students took the exam twice (Jan. and Feb.) and received wildly divergent scores. Best of all, his Jan. score on the integrated section (reading, listening, and writing) went from 18 to 28. At the same time, his reading and listening went down significantly. His overall score, therefore, remained the same. He wanted me to explain to him how he could have such low scores in the individual sections, but achieve 28/30 in the integrated. Any ideas other than the ever-popular komplo theory that the testing people want to make money by forcing students to repeat the test?
