my son and i will be going to singapore for a week next month. i 've been there quite a few times but rarely made it off orchard road ( visa runs)... does anybody out there know any reasonably priced hotels in the city where we could stay?...some place that doesn't cost a fortune......
....if anybody replies to this post, keep in mind that i do not own a lonely planet book and i will not purchase one to find the answer to this question, so please don't give me that option as i know that some of you are thinking that that very same thing right now........oh, i know you are.... and i've already put a post on the singapore forum,..................... thanks in advance to those who can help. |

I know that its not a great help if I have stayed in any of these hotels myself.. (my parents live in Singapore... so I've got an apartment to stay in)
however, this is a great website, that has heaps of hotels to look at.
One is the claremont hotel, opposite the 24 hour mall of Mustafa Centre in Little India... I havent stayed here, but have had a look thru, as some friends where staying there once...
good luck in your search

There are no real cheapies in Singapore.
The cheapest hotels are part of the Hotel 81 chain. These have clean rooms, nice bathrooms and cable TV. You can book online. The only problem is that they are basically a chain of love hotels, and are consequently mainly found around Joo Chiat, Geylang, Chinatown and Little India (places that people head to for some nookie at the weekend). You can crash in these for around SGD80 plus. You are going with you son, and so it might not be so suitable.
If you're willing to spend above SGD$100, some good options include PERAK LODGE in Little India. Also, type in KEONG SAIK road and HOTEL and you should come up with some decent little boutique places that are very reasonable.

thanks for the input. i actually googled "singapore hotels" when i went home last night and found that website and it seemed to list every hotel there.
i think what i'm actually looking for is more of a "bed and breakfast" type of thing ( i didn't mention that in my original post due to the fact that i'm an idiot). my son gets kind of weird with the whole hotel/ cookie-cutter room layout. also, don't get me wrong, i'm not looking for the cheapest thing i can find.....i just can't/ won't dish out $200 a night for a room |

Try the Hawaii hostel in Bencoolen Street. Only 25 bucks SGP. Basic but still clean and with AC. |

agreed that the Hotel 81 hotels are love nests, but cheap and clean.
Last time I was in S'pore i stayed in China town. some nice places there, near the underground station. |

On Geyland Road, there are two very clean Hotels that offer rooms for 40 SGD per night. Both offer air-con rooms with cable TV and hot water.
The area itself has plenty of inexpensive Coffee Shops, Bars and even an all night Bordello. |

Reminds me; lots and lots of restaurants and eating houses in this area at local prices.
For visitors from Indonesia, note that they all serve pork!! Something rarely seen in central and east Java.
I also found that a lot of the serving staff did not understand English too well, but try Indonesian/Malay and you're there. |
