Overall prices are cheaper in the Philippines.
You can get cheap accommodations in the Philippines from $5.00 (cheapest) to $20.00 per night (average mid range for backpackers).
You can eat meals in the Philippines for $1.00-$2.00 - dirt cheap, and the travel between cities is also very cheap.
Also - the Philippines is more 'friendly' in general, and is the friendliest nation in Asia - if not the world, for most travellers. You will receive a warm, simple welcome in the Philippines everywhere you go. That is the way it is there and things are not likely to change anytime soon.
