I'm headed to Santiago in Sept. 2007. I'm beginning to hear from a lot of people teaching abroad that online TEFL certification is not going to be good enough and I may have problems landing a teaching job. Apparently most jobs are looking for on-site certification and a teaching practicum. Is this the case in Santiago as well?
Unfortunately, time and money has limited me to choosing online certification. My hope is to get some volunteer hours under my belt before heading to Santiago with one of our local English literacy groups, helping ESL students with reading, conversation, etc. Do you think this will help in securing a job, since I won't have a practicum with my certification?
If online certification is completely useless, I'd rather not spend the money then.
