If you're willing to work for Interac or one of the big eikaiwa chains, I think it should be relatively easy to be placed in the countryside.

For the eikaiwa chains, it doesn't matter when you start. For Interac, they should be hiring some people for September starts. Check the standard job sites, here, gaijinpot, ohayosensei and so on.

The four big eikaiwa chains (Nova, Aeon, Geos and Ecc) hire at literally any time of the year. It tends to take a little bit to get the visa, and you usually have to attend an interview in some major city in all of the Anglophone countries.

ohayosensei.com has a free fortnightly job listing, which usually has at least 40 english-teacher-wanted ads, including many in rural settings.

The job board right here at Daveseslcafe.com has occasional japanese rural schools' ads, though not as many as ohayosensei.com

There used to be a site that specialized in rural schools. It was called safejobsinjapan.com
Dunno if that site is still in operation.

(Thanks for the correction monthly-->fortnightly, Glenksi. Smile )

Actually, except around the New Year holiday, OhayoSensei updates its newsletter twice a month, on the 1st and 16th.

You can pay to get it automatically, or you can skip the charges if you manually request it.

Interac fills a lot of positions each year for September starts since many ALTs finish their contracts at the Summer break. The majority finish at the break before the new school year, but quite a few postions do become available for Fall starts. You're almost guaranteed a rural location with your first contract at Interac.
