Recently, our school took our pictures, for the purpose of issuing employee ID cards. I've been here for one semester, so I am surprised by this new intrigue. Should I be worried? Thanks for any input!

What' s the big deal? It's just a picture, right?
Don' they already have your picture?
Are you living on campus?

I would guess that it is a precautionary measure for the school. To make the guards' lives easier all teachers should have an identification. It is probably better to go through the procedure as well as opposed to having another piece of ammunition for the whole (foreign teachers get this or don't have to do this) topic.

I got an ID my first year and did not my last.

And what is there to worry about The chip in your card tracking the number of times you go for a massagie massagie? haha. j/k

It's not a big deal to me, and it might make more resources available to the foreign teachers. But, this place is organized like the military, with an official 'Chain Of Command'; for example, I can't make copies of anything myself - I must submit a request to a Chinese teacher. So, why should I need a card to acquire something? Yes, they have my picture.

No.

True. This place has 7000 primary and secondary students, and the guards never check anybody's ID...

(You're right. I'll bet that's the only reason...)

I had one while I was in Qingdao (first a college then a language training centre). Because of SARS the ID was required at the college. At the training centre it was useless since everyone knew everyone else.

We have card with our pictures on them. They function as library cards and debit cards for the canteens on campus. However, I've never used mine as an ID. Nobody checks the foreigners going on and off campus.

first school I was at issued cards, but we were expected to provide our own pictures. I folded a little green 2 yuan note to show the pretty face and that was my picture. Later during the summer, we had to work 7 days a week for 10 weeks to make up classes that had been missed due to SARS. I changed my picture to that of a certain nefarious bearded person and covered over the name portion to read AllSummaBinWorkin'. Haven't had a name tag since. Don't think it's been my reputation.

Well, I just want to express my appreciation for the useful information (and funny stories) that I've garnered so far. I guess there is no need to worry. I had this fear that I might lose my card (which I haven't yet received), and suffer all kinds of school-related inconveniences related to my monthly salary, etc. I envision that in the event of another SARs outbreak, the card might even help me through major obstacles. I am in Shenzhen, so I suspect there is more concern about the possibility of SARs.

The first time I walked through the school gate on my own I was asked if I had a card. The guard advised me to get one, but it was more of a conversation starter than a rule.

In the 2 years I have been here I have not needed to produce my ID for anything. Though I have been told it is required for use of the library and swimming pool. As for aqcuiring handout copies, all I need do is sign my name.
