I am sure there are some gigs in Nha Trang but you would need some serious contacts to get to know about them. The people who have them are not going to have to advertise them. |

Have you tried ILA Vietnam. I may be wrong but I think they might have a school there, however I don't know anything about it.
Have you ever been to Nha Trang? I don't mean to put you off but I was not a fan of the place. I found it packed full of backpackers, noisy and concrete. I don't know how you feel about Vang Tau but there are a lot of established schools setting up there, and it could take off as a good teaching location. It is unfortunatly the place that Gary Glitter made infamous, so I might feel a bit uncomfortable with it, but I have heard good things from people who have been there. |

VATC has a school in Nha Trang and also in Vung Tau. I think SITC used to be there too. Nha Trang isn't that big and if you work in the provinces (outside HCMC) the pay isn't too hot. ILA has a school in Vung Tau but not in Nha Trang. |

I'd like to graft a similar question onto this thread.
I've heard that Nha Trang and Danang would be the places with the best SCUBA within daytrip-distance of English schools. Is this true? Are there better places?
How "indecent" are the salaries in Nha Trang? I've heard that a dedicated English teacher in VN typically earns $12~$25 per hour in the cities-- how does Nha Trang (or Danang, for that matter) compare?
---
Thanks for posting that Nha Trang is concrete, and loaded down with backpackers. Those backpackers might be flooding the English schools with low-commitment low-price teachers-- is that a fair estimate of the situation?
---
I've been an English teacher in Japan for the last 6~7 years, but am hoping to find decent work conditions in a tropical country, where I can SCUBA on my weekly days off. Is that a realistic goal in VN, or am I barking up the wrong tree? |

Before calling any posters a troll. Please let us know which school in Nha Trang pays decent wages. Enlighten us. |

scuba in nha trang and vietnam in general is very sub stndard. everything has been scared away by dynamite fishing ans therefore food supplys are minimal. there are no more rays etc, they have gone somewhere else.
malaysia is the best place in SE asia i have scuba'd, however im not sure about their call for english teachers!
english in the borneo region of malaysia is not as good, therefore more teachers required and the diving in sipadan and around is out of this world! |

Thanks VERY much for the pointers, Bazzap.
Choosing VietNam for a place to teach English and scuba on the side is a compromise solution-- based on choosing a place with good year-round SCUBA weather (that rules out Japan and Korea) and places that pay a decent salary (that rules out Malaysia I think, and Thailand and the Philippines).
As for dynamiting-- drat. I dove amid that in Cebu (Philippines) and darned near wet my pants while listening to the dynamite underwater. 8 times in 4 days-- yeeeeeow! Interestingly, in Cebu, the dynamite kept away all big life EXCEPT the :rays-- stingrays, I mean. There was one spot in particular with dead coral rubble and sand only, but absolutely swarming with stingrays.
Yes, if Malaysia or Thailand or Bali offered wages as good as Viet Nam's, I'd like to know it!
Tell me more about the diving in VN? |

Flying's not worthwhile, for the simple reason that
a) flying-soon-after-diving is usually a bad idea, depending on the number of dives and the depth of the dives. I'd have to cool my heels in <insert country name here> before flying home.
b) flying takes bigger money and more time than just dropping off a beach into the water, so I have promised myself to live as close to a year-round decent dive area. (I used to live in Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan-- classy diving, year-round.)
How #bleep# is Viet Nam diving? Worse than Hawaiian or Guam diving, for example? Is it the lack of undynamited corals, or wave/current/visibility problems? |

the only place i know off with dive schools is nha trang and around hoi an. nha trang diving wise will hold your interest for 2 weeks max! hoi an diving is not very popular and so therefore none too good! but vietnam is a great place to live though and the only viable places to teach are hanoi or saigon methinks.
have you looked into cambodia? diving in sihanoukville is a little worse than say kho phi phi or somewhere. in other words not too bad. cheap living costs but not sure about teacher pay.
another interesting option could be myanmar. good diving but i dont know about facilities as most diving boats arrive on packages from thailand. a very small expat community outside yangon(if any) so this would have to be thoroughly researched.
otherwise my only other suggestion would be indonesia but i know nothing about this other than the diving is ace!
can u give me some info on the phillipines. ie best scuba places, backpacker hangouts(if any!), good places to party. it seems to be not very popular with backpackers. is this true?(pm me ıf neccessary) |
