|
|
Hi,
I am planning to go to France in January for my TEFL training and to stay in France (or, at least Europe) to work (yes, I have an EU passport). I want to get a laptop but don't know whether it is better to get one here in the US or in France. Considerations: I believe the cost would be better in the US but then I won't have all the accents required for French writing. Does anyone have advice regarding the best way to go?
Thanks for any information. |

you can simply activate the accents on any normal laptop; I've done it n mn! |

I bought mine in Spain, partly for that reason. You can activate the accents on any laptop, but sometimes the keyboard format is better if you get a machine specially designed with the and the . (Makes them easier to find until you get used to it, too.)
But mostly, when choosing a computer, think price and features. You can specially order the keyboard you want in the US. See what it costs to get the machine you want, with the things you want, in the US, and the same info in France. Then get the cheap one, would be my advice.
Best,
Justin |

Thank you both. I didn't realize that the accents could be activated. I do like the idea of getting the specialty keyboard, though. Now I know what to look for and questions to ask before purchasing. Thanks! |

All my buttons are in roman script and Arabic. If someone ever changed the settings to Arabic I'd be screwed. |

I think something far more important is support. You can get a cheap laptop but if you can't find drivers, you're screwed. One of my former co-workers had a laptop from a company called 'Avetek' (or something similar) in the US. The laptop was cheap and reasonably good, but a lot of the drivers were proprietary, and when the cooling fan broke, she couldn't find one available in Mexico, but had to order one down from the States. |

I can't imagine laptops in France being anywhere as cheap as in the US. Service, however is a major factor when purchasing a laptop as IS650 said. Laptops are even more finicky than desktops and often have problems. |

I will research the brands available in France and then see which can be bought in the U.S. I, too, have had thoughts about service support.
Thanks. |
