|

I was trying to get some feedback on how easy is to get a job as a non-native speaker; and to find someone who can refer me to a particular school... if possible in Beijing... But I didn't quite get an answer last time I posted here... So PLEASE, if you are a non-native speaker teaching in China, give me some advice; or even native speakers, if you know more about it please please help me ???!! I am also looking for some summer positions.. Does anyone know about any camps that are currently looking for staff or that are regularly advartising every year?? I hope this time I will get an answer to my question! |

What country is your passport from? They probably couldn't tell that you aren't a native speaker, but your appearance and passport will be obvious. |

probably a better question is: how difficult is it to get a job here as a non-native speaker? it's not easy, but not impossible. i think the reason you didnt receive an answer last time is because, not that many (relatively speaking) schools hire non-native speakers to teach english and noone who read your previous post had an answer.
there are plenty of non - native speakers working in china, but i would suspect many of them are in less attractive/prosperous places than beijing and shanghai. i think you're going to have to widen your search parameters (beyond beijing) in your effort to find a decent job in this country.
its a fact that people who dont meet the ideal chinese (asian) vision of a foreign esl teacher (1. caucasian, 2. passport from an english speaking country) simply have to work harder to get a job. i worked with a kenyan in zhengzhou, henan. he WAS a native speaker, however he was black, which i would argue is a bigger minus than being from bulgaria (many chinese will hit the delete button when they receive a resume from any black africans). however my kenyan colleague has always managed to find work but in places like daqing, heilongjiang, and zhengzhou.
i'll send you a message and in that message i'll give you the email address of the school i worked at in zhengzhou that hired my kenyan colleague. perhaps they can help you.
as for summer camps, like a lot of FTs in china, i dont work during the summer and know nothing about summer camps. i prefer to enjoy the 10-12 weeks off (with pay sometimes) and relax.
warmest regards ~ 7969 |

Yes, I understand you... Oh well I hope at least one recruiter would eventually appreciate my skills... for I am white as well ... which seems to be a big issue in China |

you need to send out a mass email to as many schools as possible. go to chinatefl.com, get the emails of all the schools that you may be interested in, send the same email to all of them (with resume, photo, degree certificate, and passport), and see who replies. then go from there. you might get a nice surprise. some people might say send the same email but dont send the passport right away, as it might deter them right away from replying to you. but in the end, they'll ask for it, and i suspect you'll find some schools that get few emails from native speakers and will hire any foreigner who comes along.
one more thing, whenever i've tried to find work in china, the schools have always asked if i have experience in china. they want to see recommendation letters. they place some value in that, and if you dont have it, you're less desirable in their eyes (or they'll hire you but give you a lower salary).

You might want to try jiang su province. There are quite a few non-native speakers that I know of working here. As mentioned you might have more difficulty in Beijing or Shanghai were the competition is fierce. You should be up-front and honest from the start about your nationality with any prospective employer to avoid and hassles regarding visa/work eligibilty down the road. I knew an Ethiopian lady who was working at a middle school for several months, when the boss turned around and said "sorry we can't get you a visa" not sure if her being black had anything to do with it.Anyway now she's hiding out at her boyfriends, illegally! Lost touch with her, real shame she's a nice lady. I worked with this lady at a winter camp organised by the lianyungang education bureau along with a guy who was also african(forget which country). The bureau are organising a summer camp in Shuguo. I'm not sure of the exact details at the moment but will find out more If you are interested.
Best of luck to you |

Ask Steppenwolf.
Why he hasn't already jumped in with an opinion is a mystery.
For a non native English speaker, he posts a lot (volume wise). |

You apparently were interviewed in Yangshuo. Super. But out of rank curiosity, I must ask if you will be working in Yangshuo. |
