Hey, has anyone had experience with taking buses that go from Ecuador and/or Venezuela into Colombia and vice versa? I know the guerrilla groups sometimes like to operate across the borders, so has anyone had or heard of problems traveling across borders in and out of Colombia? You think it'd be better to just fly? Thanks!

There is an Ecuadorian consul near the border crossing at Ipiales, which is in a fairly secure region of the border. Never had any problems, or heard of any- and a fair number of our teachers have had to cross over the years, to sort out visa matters.

All the best,
Justin

I've heard there's lots of activity around the Colombia - Venezuela border, but that's mainly from the British Government foreign service security thingy. Take a look at Poor But Happy and the Lonely Planet Thorntree for actual traveller experiences.

I've had friends have their bus stopped by guerrillas or paramilitaries. They were terrified, but ended up only getting robbed and sent on their way. It might be ok to travel on most buses in Colombia, but being kidnapped would really ruin your day.
