I am considering teaching in Thailand. I am currently living in the state of California in the USA.I would like to know what I am qualified for? I would also like to know if I could teach at the top international schools. I have bachelors degree in social sciences from University of California at Riverside. I also hold a Masters degree in International studies from the Univeristy of California at Los Angeles. Currentlly, I am employed as Permanent Site substititute teacher at a high school for the Moreno Valley Unified School district in California. I have been working in this capacity for this district for more than two years. I have taken and passed a CBEST exam which certifies to teach as a full time substitute teacher. Howerver, I do not have a full teaching credential. Now what I want to know is this I want to come to teach in Thailand and I would like to know what kind of Jobs would be available. When I come to Thailand I am planing to take the CELTA course as soon as I get there and I know this will open up some doors. Where do I stand? Can I possibly teach at the better International Schools? Another question I have would it serve me better to stay in California at get my full teaching Credential? However this is expensive and I would have to be here another year. Considering my educational background and my teaching experience ( I teach English Language Arts by the way) would this background and experience and a CELTA course and certificate be sufficient to land a job at the top International Schools? |

You have enough paper qualifications to teach at the top jobs in Thailand especially if you do the CELTA course when you arrive as you plan (this is not essential but definately an advantage). Be sure to bring the originals of your degrees as the authorities are going through a bit of a crack down at the moment. Presumably you have had a few years teaching English as a second language--experience (or lack of) would seem to be the only thing stopping you from getting the jobs at the top international schools etc. etc. Good luck. |
