"One kilometre of road in Michoacan or Zacatecas will be more effective in curbing immigration than a 10km-long wall in Texas or Arizona," were Mr Calderon's welcoming words to Mr Bush on the first day of his visit to Mexico. |
I think I like Calderon's speechwriter. I wonder if it was converted to miles in the translation?
Yesterday saw teargas and stone throwing outside the US embassy up the street from me. No repeat as yet today. |

I heard there were some demonstrations with people burning American flags. Did any of you in DF witness anything like that? How about in any of the other cities Bush visited? |

I saw this quote in the New York Times this weekend, while Bush was still in Brazil. I just loved the mental imagery it conjured up in my head:
"The police have clashed with thousands of protesters, many carrying signs calling Mr. Bush a murderer and a fascist. A group of Mayan priests in Guatemala said Friday that they would "purify" a sacred site of "bad spirits" after Mr. Bush visits it early next week."
That is, I like the idea of bad mojo removers following Bush around like he's a dirty dog tracking mud in the house. But with much more fun and colorful cleansing rituals than using a Swiffer.
There was supposed to be an anti-Bush demonstation here on Monday outside the consulate at 4, but when I walked by on the way to classes at 3:30, things were looking pretty slow. The consulate is inside of the Oaxacan version of a strip mall, though, and I didn't go in, so maybe all of the action was inside. |

Actually, my wife and kids are part Mayan.
I have not seen the movie, yet. I just thought that it was kind of silly, especially considering that the guy who was leading the purification movement wasn't even Mayan. I find it amusing, also, when people take age old religions and try to make them into new age ones. |

Playa,
My apologies if you were in any way offended by my previous post. I was just trying to slip in a little pop culture humour.
Do yourself a favour and skip Apocalypto, too much running and not enough story. Many people found the sacrificing shocking but anyone that has read any history books on Mexico (or even Michener's Mexico) would not find it so shocking.
As for making old religions new, I too find it rather amusing when people try to make them new age. Often times they don't fully understand the origin of the religion before they decide to convert.

I enjoyed it. I went in thinking it would be a typical Hollywood action flick in an exotic setting, and that's exactly what it was. |

We didn't care for it much either, it started out really well and then turned into hollywood schmaltz...but that's not what this topic is about...

No offense taken.
I spent last week in Chiapas with some other HH people and we went to Palenque. The guide went into more detail than Mel, I think. Mayan history is full of beauty and the beast. |
