Which is better overall?
Where is more enjoyable to teach children at?
Which countries' schools offer more support to teachers?
Where are the people friendlier?
Can I get a gf in Indonesia?
Note: I know this is very broad and locations and experiences will vary. I would like to try both countries at some stage but am weighing up which one might be better to teach at first.
I have 1 years experience in Korea and no teaching certificate. Just a double degree. I am 25 from New Zealand. |

If/when you find a girlfriend in Indonesia, and it's not difficult, just remember that if things get serious, and she's Muslim, then be prepared to share that faith with her if you marry.
There are few who would be allowed by their family to marry a non-Muslim.
Personally, I found it a pain to have to vet every place we wanted to eat at, to ensure that it was 'halal'. Indonesian food is nice, but I do like a nice steak or Chinese from time to time!
There are also plenty of sweet Indo-Chinese girls, of Catholic faith.
I'm no expert in these matters and I'd be pleased to see some contructive comments. |

Ive traveled within both for many months, so I can give you my personal opinion on both...

I LOVE them both, but like Indonesia better for many reasons. First, I feel that Thailand's attitude is, "we hate you foreigners, but the ONLY reason we tolerate you at all is because you bring so much of you money here." That is not the feeling I get from the INDIVIDUALS, but from their government, based on all of their regulations about foreigners.
Bahasa Indonesia is easier for me to speak/understand/read/write than Thai. So when it comes to staying somewhere an extended amount of time and interacting with the locals, Indonesia is MUCH easier. I could probably say about 5 words in Thai, and half the time they couldn't understand what I was trying to say anyways, lol. I've learned many many more words in Bahasa and can even put together a few elementary sentences, lol.
I like feeling 'off the beaten path' and I feel a lot more like that anywhere in Indo than I do in Thailand.
Indonesia has over 15,000 islands(which means if I were to visit a new island every day for the next 40 years, I still wouldn't have time to visit them all, lol)!!! Thailand does not, lol.
But, as I said, i am in love with both countries. I liked some of the beaches I visited in Thailand more than some of the ones I have visited in Indonesia. I like the real spicy Thai food a little bit more than some of the local indo dishes.

Man, that is a tough one!!! The people at both seem very friendly!!! Thailand is known as, "The Land of Smiles." I have gotten many free rides/meals from both locals, so that one is tough.

HaHa, you might have 2 girlfriends before you even step foot out of the airport!!!! I have no idea what the male/female ratio is in Indonesia, but I feel like there are about 10 girls for every guy I see. But maybe its just me.
Either way, I really dont think you could go wrong with living/working in either country.... |

I think that's known as selective vision, lol. But i see your point.
The smaller language barrier in Indonesia does make the people and culture more accessible. I think Indonesians are also more willing to accept you into their family and culture, provided you make some effort. This makes finding a legitimate girlfriend or wife an infinitely easier task than in Thailand.
All my opinion. |

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I'm curious, in Thailand the (teacher) salary to cost-of-living ratio is not very favorable; how does that of Indonesia compare? I've read and been told that the ratio is far better in Indonesia, but is that the experience of those of you who know both countries? Thanks for any info you can provide! |

The pay is pretty poor in both countries, certainly won't be able to save much.

Interesting question about girlfriends. In my time here I have had two serious relationships, one with a Javanese Muslim woman and now with my current wife, who is Chinese (Catholic).
It is true that if someone has relations with a muslim they will be expected to convert at some point but don't take that to mean they are strict, disciplined and of good morals. My ex-gf was my worst ever and I would have done no worse with a Jaksa hooker with multiple STD's.
My wife on the other hand has been loyal and honest throughout and we now have a 1 year old son. Also there was no family pressures to convert to anything. |

Indo is better hands down.
For me, the biggest advantage is having nicer colleagues than one is likely to find in most SEA. |

gF???
You can get 5 in the same time if you can manage the time (and sometime they don even mind).........
Well.....actually I'm a bit exaggerating but it is quite easy to find a gf. And i agree with everyone, if you don really want to convert to islam, getting a indo chinese gf would be better. |
