I know this is part of the requirements for obtaining legal work status in many countries, including Costa Rica. Perhaps John Hall will include information about the other steps? Even if it's too much hassle for most teachers to become legal, having this step taken care off seems to be worthwhile. It's really just visiting your local police department and then mailing a letter and paying $18.
For anyone else looking to obtain their FBI record before they leave the U.S., just do this:
1. Print and fill out this cover letter:
http://www.fbi.gov/filelink.html?file=/hq/cjisd/cover_letter.pdf
2. Print this finger print card and call/bring it to your local police department to get your prints taken:
http://www.fbi.gov/filelink.html?file=/hq/cjisd/pdf/fpcardb.pdf
3. Include $ 18 - U.S. dollars in the form of a money order, certified check
Or pay by credit card:
http://www.fbi.gov/filelink.html?file=/hq/cjisd/credit_card_payment.pdf
4. Mail the items #1, #2, #3 (listed above) to the following address:
FBI CJIS Division Record Request
1000 Custer Hollow Road
Clarksburg, West Virginia 26306
You either get a record back that you can contest, or you get a stamp saying "NO RECORD." |

NOTE: If you need the record by a certain date, you're supposed to write that on the "OUTSIDE of the envelope" that you mail to the FBI. Otherwise it can take some ungodly amount of time (like 6 months). |
