Hello -- For someone stepping off the plane in Vietnam and looking for work, what would be the first step, besides getting a good night's sleep? I'll have copies of my credentials and degrees with me and am kind of looking forward to winging it. Are there some doors that are better to knock on than others? Or is winging it a really bad idea? Thanks.

There are plenty of threads dealing with your query, read up first before posting, and best of luck.

Will be in a similar situation myself and am starting to figure that winging it is actually a more sensible option. In terms of doors to knock on anyway-all the schools seem to have bad points and good points and I'm starting to think the only way to decide is to be there in person and assess the vibe/attitude or whatever onsite.

I also figure it'll be like any job in that location and other practicalities will (maybe unfortunately) tip the scales more than preconceived ideals about the dream place to teach (which I have many of...). Plus if you make a buddy at a school it might jump up your list just because of that.

Will hopefully be in Hanoi from early August so pm me if you get there before/after me and want to meet up/share tips

Are you landing in HCMC? Ton Son Nhat airport? If so I would suggest you make sure you get a green - metered cab to the backpacker area. The most a cab from there should cost is 60,000d. I'm assuming you have too much luggage to take a xe om (motorbike taxi) which should be between 20 and 30,000d (rain etc. can change things).

I'd get into a hotel in Co Bac or on Bui Vien for the first night or two and then start the hunt for work and the like -- getting a business card made here is cheap and effective.

There are plenty of schools on offer and I'd look at things like when the hours are -- you can work nights and weekends easily and there are more day time jobs available now than ever (summer season) -- also CEFALT, AUSP and plenty of high schools are looking.

Good Luck --

There are many guesthouses and hotels from the low to mid range of 6-15 dollars per night.

I don't know what winging it means. You can ask around for current info. on schools.
