I assume I'll be coming to Japan with dollars. Does the airport (Narita) offer decent exchange rates. Or should I just change what I need and go to a bank later? |

7-11 machines accept foreign ATM cards (at least Plus and Visa, I didn't care about others), it would probably just be easiest to do that. |

Apparently 7-11s aren't that common in some regions of Japan, so you may mot be able to find one. If you will be in the Kanto area, especially Tokyo, they are all over the place. |

Compared to the usual US bank rate, Narita isn't too bad. But it's still not good. Compared to the usual US airport commercial exchange, Narita is freakin' good.
Better yet, just use the post office when you arrive. They will offer a better rate than most any other place and their fees are usually lower.
ATM's can offer good rates if it's a debit/EFTPOS card, but are generally the worst option possible (outside of commercial airport changers!) if you're using a credit card for a cash advance - they will be upwards of 10-15 points off the prime rate, plus Visa and Mastercard will add a 3% fee for the privilege of having already gouged you. |
