Hey guys I am thinking of teaching in Vietnam. However I am wondering what items will they allow or not allow entering/leaving Vietnam? I would like to bring some of my books I am most fond of. Will they inspect them then confiscate ones they don't want me to bring into the country? Do they search through all your belongings before allowing you entry into the country? Any response or further comments would be appreciated. |

I've passed through immigration four times as well as left Vietnam four times. Never once did they check my bags.
For the most part, most books are fine. What books are you bringing in? One cool thing about Vietnam is you don't have to bring much reading material, because they copy and resell just about every backpacker book they get their hands on, and they are available for about a $1 each all along the backpacker hostel. Even better (or annoyingly so - depending on how you feel), there are tons of kids who try to peddle and sell these many many copyright-infringed books on you while you are eating, walking down the street, trying to take a piss, and any other possible opportunity they get.
So in short, books aren't much of a problem at all. Also, immigration isn't much of a problem either. The only problem might be if these books you have might for some reason seriously upset the Vietnamese government, but unless you don't think would, then they probably wouldn't.. |

Hi, I was in Vietnam in July and August. I went on a 6 month tourist Visa and I was offered teaching work all over the place from $8 to $10 US per hour and that is without qualifications and experience so a qualified and experienced teacher could receive up to $15 US. per hour there.
The best way to get work in Ho Chi Minh City is to just show up at the School with your resume in your hand and you will be able to start work immediately. They do not hire over the Internet - they like to meet you face to face. |
