I taught for a private English school in China last year, and was thinking of going back to China to teach next year. Was considering doing the same sort of thing again, although i've heard now i have some experience a university job may be a better option (although i had a good experience last year)

I would like to go jan/feb onwards next year, is it difficult to get a university job at that time of year? Any tips for getting a good job like this but just for a few months?

The Chinese New Year Spring Festival will start in most school areas around mid-January, 2009 and conclude around mid-February. I'd probably start the process around the beginning of December with a plan (should you be hired) to arrive in Feb.

The minimum they'll hire for is a semester., but most prefer a year.

Should? A monkey with one arm can get a university teaching job here. Just start looking around December, send as many applications as possible and watch the offers roll in. One point to note most universities do their hiring in September, and most insist on a one year contract. So the openings for February start semester can be because

A- Teachers have left early, because school hasn't lived up to contract or found better opportunity elsewhere.
B - School is not legally allowed to employ foreign teachers, so school just hires teachers on one semester basis.
C- Teacher has managed to negotiate one semester contract.
D- Foreign teacher is an alcoholic or some nut and has been asked to leave.
E- Foreign teacher is an alcoholic nut who just leaves.

Australian and NZ teachers often take Feb start jobs, and for none of the above reasons. We just come from a different hemisphere that runs to a different schedule. My 5 years in Chinese universities saw around a 50/50 split of FTs who work a Feb-Feb year or a June to June.
Anyway, there are always places available, particularly in more provincial locations. Don't expect to call the shots in Shanghai, for example.

Monitor Dave's jobs board or others similar. Starting about now you will see a flood of new offers for 2nd semester posts. The deluge comes in May - June for 1st semester posts, but there is always significant activity pre christmas. I could get you a job right now in eiter of my uni's in China, no problem. there is a general shortage this year over the visa situation
