Hi everyone,

Have been reading these posts for sometime now and would like to ask a more specific question of my own. I'm wondering if you think it's possible to get a short-term teaching contract (i.e. one semester-ish/no more than six months) beginning January/February with any of the more reputable institutes in Muscat - every job I've read about seems to be a two-year contract.
I'm 25 with a Bachelor degree (majored in English), a CELTA and one year's ESL teaching experience (including six months overseas - China). Spent a few weeks travelling in Oman last year and really liked it.
Also - would there be job opportunities for teaching kids, given my background? I do have 3 years' experience as a volunteer Children's program co-ordinator - but this experience is neither ESL nor within the formal schooling system.
Would appreciate any feedback/suggestions - thanks in advance Smile

Lima Echo, sounds like what you're looking for might best be matched at the language schools in Muscat, since the big guys do generally insist on one-year contracts. (If you can at all consider that, I would strongly recommed a year-long contract at a tertiary institution, since most give you two paid months off in summer anyway- a much better deal than six months with no bonuses!). You may want to consider http://www.polyglot.org/, which has branches in Al-Hail and Ruwi, both ends of Muscat. This is not a recommendation, mind, but it seems most suitable to your needs.

One problem that I foresee is that you would likely have to be there when they are hiring. These companies rarely recruit outside the country.

It would give you the excuse to come back to visit, but your expenses would exceed any job you might get as it will not have housing included. The cost of living in Oman isn't cheap. So you would need to be able to stake yourself for living costs for at least the first couple months.

Thanks very much for the feedback. If I was able to commit to a one-year contract though - would I have to begin in September when the school year starts or do they sometimes hire after the mid-year break?

Try CECN. They've been known to hire people for 3 months. Rolling Eyes
