Hi, I have a teaching job lined up for May 1st. My employer said to come on a 3month visitor visa and when I get there they will get me a working visa. Is this common for employers?
When I went to buy my 1 way ticket yesterday, the travel agency told me the Chinese Authority will want to see proof I am not going to overstay my visa. Apparently the proof I need is an expensive return ticket. Is this true? Can I tell them a may have employment and the school will help me get a 1year working visa? Can I just say I'm traveling across southeast Asia and I have yet to decide what country I want to travel to next? Would it be best to buy a cheap ticket to Thailand or something and if so, do I need another traveling visa?
Thank you for any assistance or advise you can offer

Sorry mate, Thailand is actually worse on this point than China is....Probably for the reason that there is a backpacking scene in Thailand, which is almost non-existent in China. I made up a bogus return ticket once, it was relatively easy, I just booked an itinereary with an airline, and cancelled it before giving my cc#.....Good luck! |

Dude as someone who entered China on a one way several times I can tell you the Chinese Gov't really doesn't care. As long as you have a visa you can come in. And by the way neither does Continental airlines. One ways to Beijing no problem.
The airlines have a responsibility and try to sell you a rounder to protect themselves. If you come to China on a one way and they don't let you in for some reason then the airline that brought you here MUST bring you back to your point of origin. It is an international law / treaty.
So your best bet is to buy your ticket online or direct from the airline AFTER you check their policy. Remember their policy is not the same as the Chinese governement.
If all else fails fly one way to Hong Kong and enter China through there. No one way rules to HK from the airlines. |

In a word, no. You will not be asked for proof of an onward ticket on arrival in China. Sounds to me like they're trying to scam you for the price of a return ticket.
If it becomes an issue, tell them you plan to leave overland to Vietnam. |
