| I went to the immigration office today and they gave me a 3 year visa. Of course, as it happens, I had been planning on going home once my last year's contract is up. Now I'm not sure what I'm going to do. At the very least, it's a relief to not have to depend of NOVA. Just how rare is it for an ekaiwa teacher to get a 3 year visa anyways? I personally don't know anyone who's got one. |

It's not rare. It's either 1 year or 3 years, with no rhyme or reason. I know people who were part of the same intake at NOVA, and some got 3 year visas and some got 1 year visa. They applied at the same time, were from the same town etc.
Keep in mind, even though you have a 3 year visa, and say you went back to Canada for a year and decided to come back, even if you bought a reentry permit, they can still void your visa. I know someone that who had that happen. |

When I renewed my visa last November, I wrote a 3 in the box where it asks how long is the visa to be for. So I got a 3 year. The first time I went to get a visa, I wrote a 1, so that's what I got. Do Nova people have it done for them? I had to deal with lots of dull afternoons sitting around in the immigration to get mine.
See it as the freedom to ditch Nova the moment they p iss you off, and not have to stress about getting another full time job. Good luck! |

I got two 3-year visas while I was an eikaiwa teacher. One was with Nova as a sponsor. People suggest plenty of theories as to who gets a 3 year visa but it still seems to me to be quite arbitrary. My theory is if they like the look of you you get a 3-year visa. |

That's exactly what it is-even if I do decide to go home after this contract, I won't have to leave the same day my contract ends which is a bit ridiculous.
If I want, I could bum around for a couple more months teaching privates while I do a little traveling. Or I could just switch to doing privates altogether and not have to worry about having an employer sponsor at the end of the year.
Could they really void my visa if I decided to go home for a long period of time (ie. 6 months or a year)? |

Yes, they could. But I don't know the exact details on how they decide. I know a couple cases where it has happened. However, both times the extended period was longer than 6 months. Both times the absence was longer than a year. |

Then the person who told you that is super-ignorant. Almost everyone I have ever met that has turned up on a one-year visa has been super-lucky and been given a three-year one after they get it extended. |

I suppose most people never go back for a second extension which is why it seems like those who apply for an extension never get a 3 year visa. Although when I applied for my second visa I only got a one year-so now you can say you know someone! |

I know someone that received a one year visa the first year, a one year visa the second year, a one year visa the third year and a one year visa the following year until finally he received a one year spouse visa. |

| they were rare when i was in nagasaki, and pretty much automatic when i was in kyoto. i get the feeling there may be a bit of regional variation. |

| Smile a lot (never hurts) and ask for a 3 year visa. Seems most people I know have gotten a 3 year visa. Both my renewals were for 3 years. |

I got a 3 year visa and I also worked for Nova. They basically have a limited number of them, and as far as I know, it's first come, first served.*
* This is probably true. |
