A follow up question - how can a user STOP the display of ALL USER avatars? Using something like adblock for Firefox must block on an individual basis or a whole domain when I don't want to block that domains' images on another site. It would be good if we could CHOOSE if want to display user avatars.

I uploaded my photo but I cannot find the box and the words 'Link to off-site Avatar' in my profile. Am I missing something?

It's at the very bottom of your Profile page in the Avatar Control Panel. You need to type in the exact address of the photo, including the 'http' part.

There is no avatar control panel at the bottom of my page. Only date format and then submit and reset. Confused

There's really none.
Maybe one has to get a certain number of posts before it's possible to use that feature?!

That, or something like a certain amount of time elapsing, appears to be the case. For the longest time, I couldn't find this "control panel" either. Then one day I checked, and Voil --there it was!

When you're logged in, you'll a series of small blue links, way up at the top of the page. Click on the one that says "profile", then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page.

I'm not sure why no formal directions weren't posted somewhere on the site, explaining this. I had a hard time figuring it out, myself. Especially since this mysterious "avatar control panel" doesn't even appear on one's profile page until the Galilean moons come into some mystical alignment. Rolling Eyes
