Actually I did the CELTA _free_ at a reputable local Further Education college.
That was because I'd been made redundant (well - I volunteered to avoid terminal boredom), and I was in receipt of benefit at the time, and the course was regarded as vocational in order to help re-employment.

So your information may be partly correct, but you have to fulfill certain conditions to qualify.

If you qualify for assistance as part of a plan to seek employment, I've heard that SueH's situation is still possible. You have to meet a fairly narrow set of conditions, though. (What did you do before, Sue? A friend of mine has recently been turned down, due to not being a "career teacher." Thoughts?)

But getting a thousand pound cert paid for by the government is one thing. A cert open to the public for 50 pounds, though...well, if it sounds to good to be true...you know.

Best,
Justin

I've already PM'ed Bazza, but what I did before was irrelevant: it was my unemployment and temporary receipt of benefits. (As a systems analyst I was actually a refugee from IT - thank goodness).

It was certainly nothing to do with with being a career teacher.

PS: It was a part-time CELTA, and as stated not by one of the commercial providers - by a local FE (read community) college. Not sure if that is significant.

Best bet is to search all the providers, and then do a search on payment, eligibility for remission of fees etc.

Friendlier than men in forums, or friendlier than women outside of forums? Laughing

I also got a my intial training really really cheap in the US, I paid I think 25 US dollars for the training materials, it was a joint effort between the University of North Carolina and the county to train up volunteers to teach immigrants, this was back in 1996. I did teach volunteer with UNC teaching conversation to visiting scholar's wives (mostly helping them decifer their children's school lunch menu--chicken finger's anyone?) for six months after that, then I went on to a job in Japan. It wasn't the same as a CELTA, but it turned out to be a pretty good place to start.
