I'm sure this post does the rounds, gets reposted again and again in different ways by new members. However...
Where would you say is the best place to teach in the world, all considered, and why?
And, where would you advise somebody not to go and why? |

Yes, it makes the rounds, and here is the standard reply.
1. What are your qualifications (including foreign language fluency)?
2. Age?
3. Nationality?
4. What sort of teaching did you have in mind? University? Conversation school? International school? Private mainstream school? Public mainstream school? Business English? Etc. |

The best place to teach is the place that makes you happiest! |

I'd say the best place to teach is a balance between the place you'd most like to live and the place where you can most easily afford to live.
Honestly, though, there are sooooo many variables... I don't even think I could choose a "best" out of the places that I've taught. They all have their positive and negative aspects, and being happy is really just a matter of focusing on the positives and coping with the negatives.

If it were about the money I'd have given up long ago! I'm still years away from recovering financially from living in Peru!

All good, but really I'm not trying to make any decision about where to go next, I was just interested in where people have enjoyed teaching and living.
Still Italy for me, especially when they are winning the World Cup! |

I have enjoyed Japan the past 5 years, but at this point, I feel it is best to move on. I am not sure where, should be making a decision in the next 2-3 months. I never felt that Japan is the place for me to settle down and am not sure if i will ever find a place where I will feel settled. To me, that is one of the best aspects about our profession. |

That is probably a 10 year old picture of Guy. He now has a triple chin from all those tacos and beans. |

Let me refresh your memory, since I have both pics...
2004
2006
I put on 10 kgs between the pics, but have dropped back down 3 or 4 since the latest pic. I should update the avatar again...wish I had a sexy apartment lobby and come-hither look like Kent to brandish. |

Heh, I have been the same in China. God knows how the Chinese stay thin. The food is full of oil. Although good . Having a chinese wife/mother in law who both cook great food doesn't help! |
