Anyone got a DELTA? Or know anyone who's putting theirs to good use? How helpful would this be in securing a more desirable job in Japan?

Helpful for yourself and your students, however, it isn't going to improve your chances of getting a higher paying job without other qualifications. I assume you have a CELTA already. I would say Japanese language skills will open more doors than a DELTA. |

Would a CELTA be useful? I didn't really think so. I've been teaching for over seven years and have read many of the books on the CELTA reading list. I am not sure I'd get that much out of it. Yeah, sure, any training is useful, but...
So, my money would be better spent on Japanese school? I appreciate the advice.
I'm at a shitty point in my career. Mid-30's, a lot of experience, and no qualifications. I'm not keen on the idea of working with a bunch of people fresh out of school. I realize this sounds very snobby, but I've done thousands of hours of work, and I need more challenge.
My contract is up the end of next month, I want to return to Tokyo and settle down there, but I feel like I fall into the "chaff" category rather than the "wheat" category. Pretty depressed.
I'd like to do whatever I can to pull myself out of this rut, but returning home for two years to get a master's is something I am very loathe to do at my age.
Improving my Japanese is definitely on the agenda, but I'm realistic and know that this will take years of actually living in Japan to tackle (I lived there for 4 years and studied at an institue regularly and I know that I'd still have to study my ass off to pass the level 3).
Other ideas? I've got the money and the will to do anything but live in the US for two years. Am I doomed? |

Do a masters while you work or do a masters part-time at a school like Temple. |

Sounds familiar
I'd advise either doing then MA if you plan to stay in Japan or a teaching licence if you plan going home at some point.
CELTA is completely worthless in Japan and will only get you entry level work at private language schools outside Japan.
You need a CELTA to do a DELTA and the DELTA really isn't that much use unless you plan to work in private European language schools. Even then the salary difference between CELTA and DELTA is minimal. |
