Hey guys I am thinking of teaching in Vietnam. However I am wondering what items will they allow or not allow entering/leaving Vietnam? I would like to bring some of my books I am most fond of. Will they inspect them then confiscate ones they don't want me to bring into the country? Do they search through all your belongings before allowing you entry into the country? Any response or further comments would be appreciated. |

I wouldn't worry too much. Common sense should be enough of a guide.

I have never had any problems re-entering the country, however I have had to pay a very small tax to have books that have been mailed to me inspected by the 'Cultural Censor'.

Sure would be a lot of trouble lookng through ALL those bags. of course they're not sure to search You, but do not think about bringing...well, the usual no-no's. in addition, the gov't is very sensitive about "cultural materials" books dvds cds, pictures...political materials. as previous poster suggested, your things will be far more likely to get searched if you mail them here. Bringing everything with you on the plane is the best way to avoid paying some fairly high taxes on Your belongings.
bonne chance,

How about taking in a pair of bookshelf speakers and a small amp? Would it be better to take it with me or have it shipped? (they're a bit better than consumer 'lo-fi' stuff).
How about my ripped mp3 collection? I won't be taking the originals with me when I can fit 5 or 6 CDs on one mp3 CD (and more realistically I get about 10 CDs on there because I delete the tracks I don't like). Do they get funny about 'piracy'? |

I've noticed that a lot of countries (all?) differ widely in what they tolerate within the country and what they allow at the border. |
