Lonely Planet makes it sound pretty alarming. Is it that prevelant in Taiwan? What do you hikers do?

Sorry- this is probably a Fourmosa post.

It happens. Every year a number of people come down with it, especially down south. Keep your doors and windows well sealed, and wear bug spray if you are going into the mountains, and you'll be just fine.

During the mosquito season, I wear lots of OFF. I don't know how common it is for people to contract it, but I would still recommend everyone take precautions.

A couple years ago, an Aussie neighbour kept complaining about not feeling well, and she would sweat profusely. But as it was summer everyone just put it down to the heat. She went home, but kept complaining in emails about how sick she felt, and how the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. They finally realized it was dengue fever. Shocked

I didn't get any shots before moving here, and I've been here 11+ years. I've always been perfectly healthy here. As far as contagious diseases go it's not a high-risk place to live, but there's nothing wrong with getting a few shots, I guess.

I got Dengue in Malaysia five years back. Wiped me out for three weeks. Three or four days where I literally had to piss in a bottle in my bed because I wasn't strong enough to get to the toilet.

Wicked halucinations and dreams.

Keeps coming back as well. So every time you think you are on the mend the *beep* sneaks back and wacks you for a day.

Took over six weeks to be 90% better.

Great weight loss though.
