So,
I have 3+ years experience tutoring ESL in a local college here in Seattle. The work gave me plenty of familiarity with ESL topics/subjects, etc. (And experience with students from all over the world.)

BUT, I don't have any kind of certificate--just my college degree. What I'm wondering is if this kind of experience would be attractive to most employers? Or would it be worth it to get an online certificate (mainly as a way to save money, since I have experience working with students).

Any thoughts on this kind of situation? I feel confident in my knowledge and abilities, but I realize most schools might want to see that certificate.

Would the online certificate and my experience at the college be a good combo?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

Cheers,
Jason

It depends what country and what school you apply to. In some countries the TEFL certificate is required by immigration for the work visa, yet in other countries they only want a degree. Some schools want both, and others don't care.

Where did you plan to work?

I'm looking at Ukraine mainly. But still open to other countries in that general area at this point.

Online certificate = waste of money

If you're really looking for value, and improving your teaching while getting a certificate, take a TEFL or CELTA course that's around 120 hours with an observed teaching component.
