I'd like to take on a few private students to make a bit of extra money. How much is reasonable to charge, and how many students can I expect to get? I'm thinking $20 - $25 and would like to get at least 5 students, if possible. Where's the best place to advertise? I'm thinking craigslist and around downtown, any other good places?

I'm also thinking I could make money proofreading essays, but don't really know how to charge for this - by the page, by the hour or just a flat rate?

Also, can a landlord prohibit you from private teaching / tutoring in your apartment?

It all depends on the zoning for your apartment. If it is residencial, the landlord might have grounds to prohibit you.

1. There are a bunch of essay proofreading services available. If you do a google search, you can find out how they charge and do likewise.

2. A landlord may be able to prevent you from running a business out of your apartment, but you should know that it isn't the safest thing to do, anyway! A much, much better way to do that kind of thing is to meet people at coffee shops and stuff, especially since your name is canadiangal. (also if you ended up teaching private one on one lessons, a landlord who saw a bunch of men going in and out of a female's apartment all day would likely not be thinking 'oh she's teaching recent arrivals English! How nice!").

A really good place to advertise is at international culture centres, especially if you speak even a little of the language of that country.

Nobody will care... having lived in Canada my entire life, you can do whatever you want here. As long as you pay the bills at the end of the day and don't walk around with a t-shirt that says "I TEACH PRIVATE CLASSES ILLEGALLY SO *beep* U CANADA", I think you'll be ok. What you do in your spare time is up to you. If you want to have strange men in your apartment then thats your prerogative, if anyone asks tell them its your lifestyle choice.

You people are such tight asses... I swear to god none of you would make it in the real world if you didn't have a BA or CELTA. Its not like she's teaching the Hells Angels... you people really go overboard sometimes.

Are you suggesting that CELTA trainers can take people who are unfit to function in whatever 'real world' you're referring to and somehow make them functional?? Shocked

Wow, I know quite a few people who NEED a CELTA course, in that case.
