| I will soon complete a K-12 teaching certificate, yet I have always been interested in teaching overseas, especially in Japan and sure I'd be good at it. However I have a few issues that may prevent overseas teaching. I have a managerie of pets and I also have a parent over 60. I happen to be her only son. I am curious if any companies or schools would help me gain a one year visa for my mom and also if I would be able to obtain rural inexpensive housing. I've noticed most companies offer apartments, but an apartment would be way to small and Im sure would not allow for company , including pets. I had a friend who went through the jet program years ago and I believe had a rural placement and lived in a house. I think this would be ideal for me as I don't need to live in a city. Anyone have any advice or tips? I'd also consider a temporary teaching position that offered 2-6 months overseas. |

Leave your mum at home to look after the pets. |

But aren't there pets in Japan and other countries? I know mine would have to get shots and be in a short quarantine probably, but people do bring pets over. Aren't there any jobs or schools in surburban or rural areas? And what about commuting?And what about people that live in foreign countries for X amount of years. I know visa laws are fairly strict, but when I was in college I worked for a school in an office that helped bring student families over to the states. To what degree or time frame this was I don't know. At the time I wasn't concerned. All I remember is that it was a lot of paperwork and petitioning.Looking back I wish I had learned more. Some people have told me to contact a foreign embassy or ministry of immigration and make a request. Most others have said they don't know or they can't help or no. I guess I wish had some information from those that know the likelyhood, but Im acceptping all advice, including leave mom at home. |

| Money solves everything. Sure, you can take pets with you, if you can afford it. You'll need to figure out what country you're going to, and start doing some research. |

Since you mention JET, you might try posting this on the Japan forum. To answer your questions, it really depends on which country you are interested in. If you are going to bring over a lot of pets, it doesn't really make much sense to come for a short time (less than 1 year). Some pets might not be allowed in the country you choose. You have to be careful, especially in the case of some birds, rodents or reptiles.
Also if you are renting, especially in Japan, having 1 pet is a problem, so I have no idea how the idea of a managerie would go over, probably this would severely limit where you can live.
As for your mother, again depends on the country and if they would allow for a dependent's visa.
Do you know which countries you are interested in?

Pets in Japan are still prohibited in most cases, even for Japanese renters. Dogs and cats especially. Since you seem to have more than one pet, that would make life only more difficult in Japan. MUCH more. Even though the quarantine process here has become more lax (perhaps shorter, too), you are still going to face the difficulty of finding a landlord that is willing to accept pets. I strongly recommend that you find homes for your pets where you live now instead of bringing them here. You may find that if you get a job beforehand, then show up with pets, that you will have no place to go.
As for bringing along your mother, how does SHE feel about it all? |

Well japan has always been high on my list, but i'm also interested in Korea, Taiwan, China, Spain, Russia , UK (although they wouldn't need an ESL teacher, but maybe an art teacher) other parts of europe, and Brazil.
It's defintely a lot of research. Your right it wouldn't make sense to go only for a short time unless I went alone. As far as teaching overseas does it provide a good living has anyone started out teaching and moved on to another career while overseas? Or maybe maybe taught and worked a second job? |
